Comes the Dream

By Joy Whitman (an email from Rye Arao)

After a while, you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and sharing a life.
And you learn that love doesn't mean security
And loneliness is universal.

And you learn that kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises
And you begin to accept your defeats.
With your head up and your eyes open,
With the strength of a man,
Not the gift of a child.

And you learn that you build your hope on today
As the future has a way of falling mid-flight.
For tomorrow's ground can be too uncertain for plans.
Yet each step taken in a new direction
Creates a path toward the promise of a brighter dawn.

And you learn that sunshine burns if you get too much
So that you plant your own garden and nourish your soul
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that love, true love, always has joys and sorrows,
Seems ever present, yet is never quite the same,
Becoming more than love and less than love, so difficult to define.

And you learn that through it all
You really can endure
That you really are strong
That you really do have value
And you learn to grow
With every goodbye you learn...

About a Sailor

Happy sailor, go away
Come again another day
'Cause your heart still wants to play
Please, please sail away

Happy sailor, do not play
Do not leave my heart at bay
Vow you will be true and stay
Or turn your back and sail away

Here's a map to guide your way
Use it please, don't go astray
'Cause one day you'll be old and gray
Then, you'll no longer want to play

For all the hearts you leave at bay
For all the lies your eyes betray
One day, one day, you will pay
While on your death bed you lay

So please, please don't go astray
Please, please find your way

Find your way
to me...
with me...

Vow you will be true and stay
with me...
